On today’s episode, Once Upon a Crime Books introduces us to Jessie Chandler and her new novel, Shanghai Murder, which is available to buy in paperback, in store, or on their website, and it is also available as a digital audiobook this May. Hello, Jessie.

Jessie Chandler
Hi! It’s great to be here. Thank you so much.

J.P. Der Boghossian
We are so happy to be hosting you. And how our podcast works is I have seven questions for Jesse, and we’re going to spend approximately the next seven minutes in this virtual studio talking about Shanghai murder. So Jesse, are you ready?

Jessie Chandler
I’m so ready, bring it on.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Okay, well I will set the timer and here we go. Question number one. Please describe Shanghai murder as if you’re sharing it with your celebrity crush and telling us who that special person is.

Jessie Chandler
Alright, so, Shanghai Murder is the sixth book in my Shay O ‘Hanlon Capers series. So, I call this series a little bit of a cross between Carol Burnett and slapstick comedy, along with a lot of physical comedy and Scooby -Doo for adults. So, my celebrity crush is Sandra Bullock.

J.P. Der Boghossian
God, I love that.

Jessie Chandler
and I think that she would be perfect to be Shay in my novel. And so I would just let her know that, you know, especially if she wanted to play with Shanghai, she would be stuck in the tunnels under Portland called the Shanghai tunnels and crawling around in the dirt and dust and cobwebs trying to figure a way out. She might find some…

J.P. Der Boghossian
Oh, ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho

Jessie Chandler
Illegal goods that are gonna get her in big trouble and she’s gonna try and fix that up But the fun part about Shay is that so many crazy things happen and yes, you do have to spend suspend a little bit of disbelief But it’s so much

fun, if I can say so myself, that I think she’d get a kick out of it. So, that’s my celebrity crush. My book is really fun. It’s really, really fun. Yeah.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Well, you’re allowed to say that your book is fun.

J.P. Der Boghossian
There we go.

Okay, question number two. What is a sentence from a novel or an essay or a poem or any other book that every time you read it, it gives you all the feels?

Jessie Chandler
All right, this is something from Elizabeth Sims and it’s, I don’t even know where I heard it or read it, but that has stuck with me. And it’s that people may come and go, lives can change in an instant, but love and friendship will last forever. So, especially during the interesting times I am going through in my life right now, that’s really been a.

a big give me the feels kind of thought, end quote. So that’s what is motivating me to keep on trucking.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Thank you for sharing that. I’m sure it’ll be really important also for other folks listening to the podcast to hear, so thank you for that. Okay, question number three. What do you feel is the best sentence you wrote in your book?

Jessie Chandler
You bet.

Jessie Chandler
Okay, that is really hard to narrow these things down into something that might be not just in my head funny. But, so this is very, very short, but it’s one of the bad guys is talking to Shay and he tells her, you try and escape and I’ll introduce your ass to a little ballistic therapy. That’s it. And.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Ha ha.

Jessie Chandler
And poor Shay, she’s always in the pickle of something or another and right now she’s in deep trouble.

J.P. Der Boghossian
That’s a good euphemism.

Jessie Chandler
Yeah.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Okay, question number four. What is the best scene in a mystery or crime book that you have ever read?

Jessie Chandler
So, J .M. Redman has come out with a new book called Transitory, just this year, and, or this past fall, I guess. And it’s the very opening scene, and Mickey Knight is her protagonist, and Mickey is at a bar, it is late at night, and she’s heading out, and she witnesses a…

trans woman run down and then the cars, I think it was a couple cars, they disappear and Mickey goes to her and she’s saying, please stay with us, stay with us and the woman just is slipping away and then she slips away altogether and that has been one of the most impactful scenes.

especially right at the beginning that just like rips your heart right out and That one’s not humorous, but it’s it’s just you know a shot to the heart for sure

J.P. Der Boghossian
I can see why. Wow, what’s the title again?

Jessie Chandler
Yeah, it’s called Transitory. Uh, so it’s, it’s, I think number 11 in the Mickey Knight series, she’s been writing it since the mid nineties. Um, she had four books out, then took quite a break and then has come back to the series. Uh, in fact, JM Redmond was the third book in her series, intersection of law and desire was the catalyst for me wanting to write because I just was so gripped by her characters and her characterization and.

Dialogue and they became our friends and then when initially that series ended after four books, it was like I don’t have any friends anymore So I have to create my own so here we are! Yes.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Yes! Okay, so with a minute and a half left, question number five, what are your favorite smells to write about?

Jessie Chandler
Oh, stuff outside. I love to write about the smell of cow pies and flowers and crazy things like that. Gross stuff, good stuff. And I love this to write about the smell of food, because I love to eat. And so the big deal in Shea, the main character, owns a coffee shop, and cinnamon rolls are a specialty for them.

I love the smell of those so that’s kind of the fun part there.

J.P. Der Boghossian
So evocative, so evocative. Okay, question number six. When it comes to writing mystery, what is the worst writing advice you’ve ever got?

Jessie Chandler
So I worked for Borders for many years and we had a published New York author in to do a talk, which nobody showed up for. But I had told him I was interested in writing because that was right when I was kind of getting into it. And he’s like, oh, don’t even bother. You’ll never get published. And I thought that was some pretty shitty advice. I mean, bad advice. I thought that was some really bad advice.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Uh, yeah. Ouch. Ouch. Jerk. Okay.

Jessie Chandler
Yeah. Yeah, yep. Yeah, exactly.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Oh, well, clearly they were wrong and congratulations on so many of your books, which leads us right into our next and final question. Promote yourself. How do we order your book at What’s Upon a Crime Books? How do we connect with you and follow you on social?

Jessie Chandler
Thank you so much, JP. Thank you.

Jessie Chandler
Yep, yep. So yes, you can get my books at Once Upon a Crime. You can get them autographed if you want and sent to you, inscribed if you’d like. I’ve got them available. And basically I’m mostly on Facebook, not real good at that, and Instagram under at Jay Chandler author. So that’s where you’d get a hold of me.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Perfect. All right, website?

Jessie Chandler
My website is www.jessiechandler.com.

J.P. Der Boghossian
Alright, well thank you so much, Jesse. This has been really fantastic. Congratulations on your book again.
